Philosophy of Education
Three characteristics that would define who I am as a teacher would be collaborative learning, student oriented, and teaching the basics. I am a firm believer on building the classroom and lesson plans to fit the needs of the students. The classroom should be a place where student feel like it is “their” classroom and not “Ms. Lopez’s classroom”. I am also a firm believer in collaborative learning. Incorporating activities that involve partner work helps students learn how to work together to accomplish a certain task. The last characteristic that would define me as a teacher would be teaching the basics. Teaching students the basics like math, social studies, language arts, and science gives students a foundation to their learning. It’s important that student understand the true basics before they can go off and learn other complex concepts. The choice of characteristics is due to my progressivist and essentialist approach to teaching. Incorporating collaborative learning in the classroom allows students to learn and work with one another to help acquire the ability to work in a team when they get out in the real world. Also having a student oriented classroom where student’s interest and needs will be taken in consideration in how I teach and what I teach also shows my progressivism approach. Having a high structured classroom where students are just sitting in their desk listening to a teacher lecture and not being able to collaborate in lessons is not by opinion of how teachers should teach. I want my class to work together and give their input whenever they can. My essentialist teaching approach shows through teaching the basic skills to students. Acquiring the basic skills enables children to acquire the knowledge they will need to function in the today’s world. As a teacher my main focus is on the students and teaching skills that will benefit them in the future.
